Add page numbers to a big PDF

The browser version does this without uploading anything, and that is the one to use first. This one is here for files too big or too odd for a browser tab to chew through.

Runs on our server — the file is uploaded, processed and sent back.

Questions

Do my files get uploaded?

Yes — this one runs on a server, so the file is sent over the network and processed there. If you would rather nothing left your device, use the browser tools on the main page instead.

Is there a watermark or a sign-up?

Neither. No account, no watermark on the output. The practical limit is your device memory — large scanned files use more of it.

Guide: numbering a large PDF

When you'd use this over the browser version

The browser version on the main tools page does the same job without uploading anything, and is the one to reach for by default. It asks the browser to hold the whole PDF, every page's rendering, and the modified result in memory at once, which is fine for most documents but can slow down or stall on a very long scanned file — hundreds of pages of high-resolution scans, for instance. This server version does the same work on a machine built for it, so size is no longer the limiting factor.

Same settings, different engine

The controls are the same as the browser tool: six corner positions, five number formats (plain, "page of total", dashed, and two spelled-out styles), size, starting number and colour. Nothing about how the numbers look or where they sit changes by using the server version — only where the processing happens.

What "uploaded" means here

The file is sent to the server, numbered there, and sent back; it is processed in a temporary location and is not kept afterward. For files that are not unusually large, the browser version avoids this upload step entirely and is both faster for a typical document and private by default, which is why it is the one listed first on the main tools page.

More questions

How large does a file need to be before I should use this instead?

There's no fixed cutoff — if the browser version becomes slow or the tab becomes unresponsive on your device, that is the signal to switch to this version.

Does this have a daily limit?

No set limit — it is a free tool we run ourselves; a small day-pass option exists for anyone who wants to support the running costs, but using it does not require one.

Can I use this on a password-protected PDF?

Remove the password first with Remove PDF password — an encrypted file needs to be unlocked before any other tool can read its pages.

Will my numbering settings carry over if I later use the browser version?

No — the two tools don't share settings; you'll re-enter the position, format and starting number if you switch between them.
