Watermark a large PDF
The browser version does this without sending your file anywhere, and that is the one to use first. This one is for files a browser tab struggles with.
Open the toolRuns on our server — the file is uploaded, processed and sent back.
How it works
- Add the PDFThe file is sent to the server.
- Type the wordsDRAFT, a name, a date. Set how dark and how slanted.
- DownloadSave the watermarked file.
Questions
Yes — this one runs on a server, so the file is sent over the network and processed there. If you would rather nothing left your device, use the browser tools on the main page instead.
Neither. No account, no watermark on the output. The practical limit is your device memory — large scanned files use more of it.
Guide: watermarking a large PDF
When you'd use this over the browser version
The browser watermark tool on the main page keeps the file on your device and offers control over size, opacity, colour and angle. This server version trades some of those controls for the ability to handle files a browser tab might struggle with — a long scanned document, for instance, where rendering every page to apply a watermark client-side becomes slow.
What it actually does
This version is deliberately simple: type the watermark text — it defaults to "CONFIDENTIAL" — and the server stamps it across every page. There is no size, opacity, colour or angle control here the way there is in the browser tool; it applies a fixed style suited to a quick, unambiguous stamp rather than a customised look. If the exact appearance matters — a specific colour to match a brand, a subtle low-opacity mark rather than a bold one — the browser version on the main page gives that control, provided the file is a size it can comfortably handle.
Why so few settings
This tool exists specifically for the case of a large file that needs a watermark quickly, not for fine visual control — the two server-side watermark needs (big file, simple stamp) and (specific appearance) pull in different directions, and this version is built for the first one.
What it is for, and what it is not
Like the browser version, this stamps visible text onto every page — useful for signalling status at a glance, not for securing the file. It does not encrypt anything and does not stop someone determined from editing it back out. If the goal is to control who can open the file at all, pair this with Password Protect, which works on files of the same size.
More questions
Not in this version — it applies a fixed style. Use the browser watermark tool for size, opacity, colour and angle control.
It's a sensible default for the most common use case; change the text field to anything else — a name, a date, "DRAFT" — before running it.
Yes, though the new watermark will be added on top of whatever is already on the page rather than replacing it.
Files up to 100 MB are accepted here; this is one of the reasons to use this version over the browser one for a large scanned document.
